PESHAWAR: At least 12 people, including a policeman and a three-year-old child, were killed and another 35 injured when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives-laden vehicle at a police checkpost in the provincial capital, police and hospital staff said on Saturday.
The bomber struck the checkpost just outside the entrance to the Peshawar Cantonment at Pishtakhara Chowk, which is situated on the junction of the Bara and Ring roads and is close to the city’s border with Khyber Agency.
Police checkpost: Cantonment Superintendent of Police Nisar Marwat told reporters that the vehicle, driven by the suicide bomber, was signalled to stop at the checkpost. He said the bomber detonated the vehicle after a brief talk with a policeman, who had approached the vehicle for inspection. The blast destroyed several vehicles and a nearby CNG station. Marwat said around 50-60 kilogrammes of explosives had been used in the attack.
Three hospitals in Peshawar put the death toll at 12, while 34 people were reported injured. Eight of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
No negotiations: NWFP Senior Minister Bashir Ahmed Bilour told reporters at a hospital that the government would not negotiate with the terrorists, adding that the nation stood by the army against the terrorists. The explosion is part of a string of deadly attacks that have hit the city in the past few weeks.
